Hi,

We just recently upgraded our Email server to Windows 2008 server with Exchange 2007.  Previously we use NTbackup to backup the first storage group and it would clear all the log files in the \Program Files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA path.  What would be the best method to backup Exchange 2007?  Can I still use the Windows backup or do I need to look into third party software?

We use Symantec Backup Exec (v12.5). It does a good job and has features for Exchange 2007.

Bob,

So do we!
Haven't needed to restore any Exchange elements though. Restored general stuff OK.

Maybe someone can tell me a good way to test the restore of Exchange Folders / Messages without risking the existing good stuff!

Guys,

It looks like they will be adding a plugin for Windows Backup on Windows 2008 to allow you to backup Exchange 2007.

http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2008/06/18/449031.aspx

"Exchange Volume Snapshot Backup Functionality - A new backup plug-in has been added to the product that will enable customers to create Exchange backups when a backup is invoked through the Windows Server 2008 Backup tool. Exchange Server 2007 didn't have this capability on Windows Server 2008 and additional solutions were required to perform this task. "
Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 2 available in Q3 2009

I do not know when this will be out or not.....

Thanks...

While W2K8 will be getting the ability to backup Exchange 2007 with it's native backup client, it looks like it will be pretty minimalistic.  I'd go with a 3rd party solution if I were you.  I'm a big fan of Backup Exec myself.  I've used quite a few over the years and BE has been one of the better ones I've ever used.
