I am trying to design a very secure Exchange 2007 deployment on Windows 2008. I would be using the latest SP for Exchange.

What i want to be able to do that i could do in Exchange 2003 is the ability to get the internal mail server to poll the mail relay server every few seconds/minutes to see if any new mail had been delivered.

Hence in the case of 2003 i would install a front-end 2003 server on the DMZ, a backend 2003 server in the LAN. Set up the SMTP on the backend so that it would poll the front end with basic authentication and when such a request was received by the front-end it would delivery any mail it had received.

This way the internal trusted system always initiates the connection, rather than the DNZ un-trusted server initiating the connection.

Is there a way to do this with the edge role in the DMZ and the Hub role on the LAN?

Thanks
