Hey all,

Hope you can help point me in the right direction.

I have just installed Exchange Server 2007 on Windows Server 2008.

My end goal is to be able to send and recieve emails under various registered domain names. So far I have set up the abillity to recieve emails but when it comes to sending I have a problem. I dont wish to use an external SMTP server - I want exchange to send the emails itself. I believe the Edge Transport server is what I am after (?) but this does not work on the same server. Ideally, I want everything to remain on this one server as my resources are limited.

What are my best options? Note that until today I have had zero experiance with exchange or MS servers.

Any input is appreciated.

Regards.

Hi,

Install and Exchange server with CAS, HUB and mailbox role this will save some hardware. Then create a send connector on which delivers mail via DNS. This needs to be configured on the HUB server via the EMC.

Okay thank you for that repy! I think I have configured that correctly now.

I am now having problems connecting to exchange from Outlook 07.

I am on a machine that is on a workgroup; not a member of the domain the exchange server is running on. I am trying to setup an Outlook profile using an email that is part of the 'accepted domains' tab list. Lets call this hosta.com :

hosta.com has its DNS aname set to my webserver and its mx record set to the public IP of the exchange server I just set up.

Now, in Outlook, I follow the autosetup wizard filling in the generic details and as the email address I set it as username@hosta.com. When it attempts to connect to this my firewall tells me that it is trying to connect to the IP that is in the aname (my httpd) and not the IP included for the mx record. Im not entirely sure if this is what is supposed to happen? Anyway, it fails to do any sort of autodiscover for my details and fails altogether.

On attempting to use the manual configuration for Exchange in Outlook I enter the hosta.com address. Again, not sure if this is correct? (hosta.com arecord points to my httpd, mx points to my exchange) If I was part of the domain that exchange resides on I would assume I entered the netbios or such name here but I am not. After this it just doesnt pick up the account.

What am I doing wrong here?

Any input is highly appreciated.

Regards

Hi,

I assume you registered the records in the internal dns and try to setup Outlook from the LAN.

The automatic configuration is using the feature called autodiscover. This needs an A record in your DNS called. autodiscover.domain.com. Please ensure that this exists.

About the MX, to which A record does this point to the hosA A-record ?

So here's how I recommend to configure the internal DNS:

- create an A-record called mail.domain.com and point it to the
internal IP-address
- create a MX-record which points to mail.domain.com
- create a CNAME for example owa.domain.com which points to the
A-record mail.domain.com

In your external DNS configure the same records only with the external ip-addresses.

When configuring the client manual when pressing the verify button does the exchange servername gets underlined ?

Thank you for that reply! I have set everything up as you have recommended apart from the internal DNS as all of our machines are using the ISPs.

OWA is now working perfectly and I Outlook 07 is working within the same LAN (note: not a domain member machine) but is not working outside of the LAN.

I can ping the exchange server by IP and using the mail.domain.com domain which points to the IP.

It tells me - "Outlook cannot log on. Verify you are connected to the network and are using the proper server and mailbox name. The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action."

This is the error I recieve when using different machines outside of the LAN.

Any help is appreciated!

Hi,

Can you please test it on www.testexchangeconnectivity.com and post the results here.
