Hi,
I am new to windows and exchange, so please bear with my limited knowledge of windows.
My company is planning to deploy Exchange 2007.
I downloaded trial copies of Exchange 2007SP1 and Windows Server 2008R2 and successfully installed them on a 64-bit server. This will be a standalone system. I installed the AD and DC on Hub Transport, Mailbox and Client Access roles for exchange 2007.
When I run dcdiag /test:DNS, the test fails with Name resolution not functional and No host records (A or AAAA) were found for this DC.
And the users are not able to connect to owa, they always get password or username incorrect.

My setup is as follows
DC - mars.domain.tld
Domain - exchange0.domain.tld
both mars.domain.tld and exchange0.domain.tld are resolveable, I can ping and dig both.
Usder exchange0.domain.tld I have defined a top-level OU Exchange0 and under that I defined two organisational units Company1.com and Company2.com, Both company1 and company2 have two OU defined under them Groups and Users, I basically followed the setup found here

http://www.msexchange.org/articles_tutorials/exchange-server-2007/migration-deployment/shared-hosting-exchange-2007-part1.html
for shared hosting as we will be hosting two companies on the same server.

We don't have anyother machines in our network running windows or windows server, we have all unix setup on out network.

Appreciate if anybody can guide me how to trouble shoot the problem of no logins and errors found on running dcdiag and give me links to some good tutorials for setting up a standalone exchange server for shared hosting.

Do not put Exchange 2007 on Windows Server 2008 R2.

Hi,

Totally agree with Mark see this post on technet from someone from MSFT:

Hi.

Yes, I agree with Amit. We do not have any official document on how to run Exchange 2007 sp1 on that OS version due to that Windows 2008 R2 is in beta version. We are looking forward to the Exchange 2007 sp2.

So far, I recommend you not to install Exchange 2007 SP1 on Windows 2008 Server R2 Beta.

Regards,

Yup. You are not supported with Exchange 2007 on R2.

Applies for SP2 of Exchange but since you have to think through your architecture you just can't install it and expect to go forward.

Hi,
Seems like Exchange 2007 SP1 does work on Server 2008R2, I can log into owa as administrator and then become a user once full access is granted to the administrator for that user.
However when users try to log in directly they always get a invalid username / password message.

So it seems like I am missing some authentication settings or permissions either on IIS or exchange or active directory side.

Appreciate if someone can guide me to some diagnostic tools where I can monitor the logging process in real time and see why the logins are failing.

Really appreciate any help.
Thanks,
mtewari

Hi,

Exchange 2007 OWA always works good with certificate included.
The problem is not with authentication.
Have you added A record in DNS pointing to mailserver
and MX record poiting to that A record.

Cheers,

What's the point? What's the point of putting Exchange 2007 SP1 onto Windows Server 2008? What are you going to do when something goes wrong and Microsoft say to upgrade to SP2? You can probably install SP2 but what are you going to do if it doesn't fix your problem? Microsoft won't support you.

You have no need to put Exchange 2007 on R2. There is nothing to gain from it. Go and put Exchange 2007 on Windows 2008.

I have the same problem, my client have bought 2007 exchange server but its not installed now. We bought two new servers with Server 2008 R2 :( Will Exchange 2007 SP2 work on R2? if not, I have big problem :) those was OEM version, I doubt that I can downgrade them to 2008 normaln.

Forget about "downgrading"! Just wipe the servers clean and install Windows 2008 (NOT R2!!) on them! Exchange 2007 is not supported on Windows 2008 R2. Or jump ahead and install Exchange 2010 on the servers.

I tought downgrading only what means licence... because its OEM I did not know, that its possible or not to downgrade... today my Microsoft Vendor confirmed me, that if I get some OEM MS Win2k8 media, I can install it by OEM MS Win2k8 R2 licence key, what is super for me - hope it will work.

Anyway, has someone some links, where I could get OEM Win2k8 CD? :)
