Hello All,

Ran into an issue with one of our clients. They had a computer infected with a mass mailing worm and ended up on a block list. As it takes time to get off those block lists, here is the question.

Is there a way, if a company is sending mail via DNS. If any SMTP error or NDR is generated because their IP is blocked from sending mail. Can an automatic fail over be configured to send via a SmartHost?

Thoughts?

In short no you can't do this as an automatic failover.

If you are having problems sending via DNS you can use smarthost but you would need to manually reconfigure mail flow.

Of course, before you start using a smarthost, make sure you are not sending any spam through their servers or they may refuse you access. If it is an infected bot on a workstation this will be going out through your IP and not smarthost in any case, but if your server has been compromised, you may have SPAM being routed through the smarthost service. Make sure your queues are clear before chaning to smarthost.
