Where is the OWA Virtual Directory now, under the Default Web Site, or the SBS one?

Have a look at the properties of the SBS Applications Site, and see what port numbers and IP addresses are configured, and if there is a host header name configured.

All the OWA sites are in the IIS site calles "SBS Web Applications" which is listening on:
*:80:Sites
remote.domain.com port 80 all IPs
https port 443 all IPs

This is the same config as other SBS 2008 servers.

Only one HTTP Response header is configured. This is a default one:
X-Powered-By - ASP.NET

Is the Default Web Site also configured to listen for HTTPS SSL traffic on port 443 ?

No.
It is configured like this:

I just installed Service Pack 2 for Windows Server 2008
It looks like it did the trick.
I will do some more testing and post a reply in case someone runs into the same bizzare problem.
