everything looks okay when testing activesync via www.testexchangeconnectivity.com

except at the end where i receive the following error:

Attempting FolderSync command on ActiveSync session
FolderSync command test failed

Additional Details
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=817379
Exchange ActiveSync returned an HTTP 500 response.

I'm using a single exchange 2003 server and form based authentication is already disabled
In this case do i need to create a new exchange virtual directory?

thanks for any advise

Please have a read of my blog article about Exchange 2003 and Activesync:

http://alanhardisty.wordpress.com/2010/02/28/exchange-2003-and-activesync-configuration-and-troubleshooting/

Microsoft KB Article 883380 - Method 2 would be my recommendation right now.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883380

Whilst deleting Virtual Directories - please also delete the exchange-oma if it exists, then follow KB817379 and add it afterwards if Forms Based Authentication or SSL on the Exchange virtual directory is required.

great info alan thanks

i followed the instructions in your blog article and everything looks fine this side except i noticed that ASP.net 2.0577 is running on the exchnage virtual directory and not ASP.net 1.1

is this a problem as i'm unable to change the setting to 1.1 because its greyed out?

i notice that ASP.net 1.1 is set okay on the activesync virtual directory

i don't know where IISADMPWD is to check your recommened settings?

-------------

at this point anyway i tested again via testexchangeconnectivity.com and received now the following error, which is different from before:

Attempting FolderSync command on ActiveSync session
FolderSync command test failed
An HTTP 403 forbidden response was received. The response appears to have come from Unknown. Body is: <body><h2>HTTP/1.1 403 Forbidden</h2></body>

have you an idea what this may pertain to?

i haven't yet carried out "method 2" from your post, hopeing that this may indicate directly whats up

thanks for your help

I have seen some server where ASP 2 works, but others where it doesn't.  Not a show stopper (yet), so let's focus on the 403 error for now.

Also, the IISADMPWD is not always there.  It will be there if you have implemented the Password Reset facility via OWA, but most people have not done this : )

The 403 error is usually caused by having Forms Based Authentication enabled or when SSL is enabled on the Exchange Virtual Directory.  To get around this, you can create an exchange-oma virtual directory and the steps for this are in my article, but to save you a few clicks, follow MS KB817379 - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817379

Once you have done that - test on the test site again and hopefully all will be well.

But if not - I'm floating around today - a couple of new customers to go and see, otherwise on my iPhone, solving problems one at a time !!

i followed the steps in the KB article, except for the last part of enabling forms based authentication as i figured this wound't matter so much at this point? correct me please if i'm wrong

tested again and got the following different error:

Attempting an ActiveSync session with server
Errors were encountered while testing the ActiveSync session
Attempting to send OPTIONS command to server
Testing the OPTIONS command failed. See Additional Details for more info
A Web Exception occurred because an HTTP 401 - Unauthorized response was received from Unknown

 what do you reckon?

edit:

i enabled forms based authentication and ran the test again and got the following different error at the same point as above:

An HTTP 403 forbidden response was received. The response appears to have come from Unknown. Body is: <body><h2>HTTP/1.1 403 Forbidden</h2></body>

With FBA enabled, you need to create the exchange-oam virtual directory (with SSL disabled) so that Exchange can work.

As I posted above, follow KB817379.

The 401 error is usually a bad username / password.

Sorry - my last comment should read "create the exchange-oma" virtual directory.

I can only recommend you re-read my article, check your IIS settings and the KB articles mentioned and if you get stuck, then as mentioned at the bottom of the article, I have had some HTTP 500 errors that won't go away despite all of the above, so it may be time to place a call to Microsoft to get them to work on your server remotely.

Not much more I can suggest I am afraid.

Sorry.

Alan
