Hello members, I need to know an ideal setup for exchange 2010, who is as redundant as possible. What is the best setup? I am thinking in the direction of 2 EDGE role servers, in a DMZ, with 2 different wan ip's, connected to mx records with preference 10 and 20. Behind that, in the normal network, 2 servers with the CLIENT access role, and behind that, to start with, 2 servers with the other roles on it. (can i use DAG to replicate the mailboxes from server 1 to server 2, and vice versa?) The environment needs to support outlook anywhere, smartphone connections,.... Am i looking in the right direction, or am i completely missing it? :-) Thx in advance, Smette

I guess it depends also on whether you have only one site, as whats the chance of one server being down or the whole site? If you were splitting them into/between 2 sites fair enough, else its about load balance on CAS and yes 2 back servers but why 2 edge unless you have them connected to 2 different telephone exchanges on 2 seperate sites? High availability creates its own cluster, wont even install if Ms Cluster service is already installed. You didnt say anything about virtualisation (VMware) is this also in the equation anywhere and no Citrix or terminal services/remote desktops to consider etc? So your choice is high availability on one site or business continuity over 2 sites, which are obviously completely different sinarios requiring different answers as they have completely different issues to consider.

The idea is to have HA on one site, maybe later to more sites, but this is not the point today. I said 2 EDGE servers for the event that one machine physically goes down, but maybe this is to much. Since it should be running on vmware, which gives other options for HA... Everything should/will be running on vmware esx. Gr, Smette

Smette I was just trying to consider all the angels thats all. ESX is fine but just consider the servers config for disk subsystem I/O and networking for replication. I guess it depends then on the nos of users current performance and future requirements but thats not a serious issue if the boxes you use have spare capacity available for future expansion. Good luck with your project !!
