We are running outdated versions of Cisco Unified Call Manager 4.2(3)sr1 and Unity 4.2(1). Having recently upgraded to Exchange 2010 from Exchange 2003 we are interested in testing the UM services as a possible replacement for Unity (which would occur along with a CUCM upgrade).

Unfortunately, our version of CUCM is not supported with Exchange UM 2010 (or 2007). This puts us in a pickle because we would really like to test it prior to upgrading anything, but apparently can't test unless we upgrade CUCM first.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how we can create a test environment for Exchange UM connecting to our CUCM server for evaluation purposes only? There *must* be some way to do it, even if it isn't supported.

We have a lab environment setup with CUCM and Exchange 2010 in a segmented network. We have all exchange 2010 boxes on VM's and a CUCM setup. To set this up we took snapshots of our production AD environment and put it on the lab. We then established AD LDAP sync between lab CUCM and lab AD. After that we created SIP trunk between Exchange UM and CUCM. UM testing worked really well.
