Hi,

I am building a new mailbox server and I am just wondering what the consensus is in regards to installing AV on the mailbox server. I currently have Forefront for Exchange v10.2 installed on the Edge Transport and our Client Access/Hub transport server and our current mailbox server. I am replacing the existing mailbox server with a new one and I really do not see the need to install Forefront on this mailbox server. I am the believer of not running AV on the mailbox server becuase of the overhead is imposees on the server. How many places do I really need to have Av protection? I scan all mail transported in/out the organization, so I do not see that need to have it on the mailbox server again.

What is everyone thoughts on this?

Thanks,

Sean

I am in favor of having AV on the mailbox server and set to do scans at regular intervals (usually out of hours).

This is because of prior experience where viruses have made it past transport scanners before they were updated with the latest signatures and made it all the way to the database.  They are then later caught by a scheduled scan.

Another reason is that it allows different engines to be applied at different layers, increasing the chance of catching very new threats.

Remember you can tune Forefront to be less resource intensive on certain servers, so its impact is quite manageable.
