So our OWA and OMA work, and activesync works with droids and palm phones, but for somereason I can't get it to work with windows mobile 6.5. We're running everything from a backend exchange 2003 SP2 server right now. We're working on implementing a front end server, but we're not there yet...

any ideas?

The reason you have Activesync working with a Droid nd an iPhone but not a Windows Mobile phonier is probably down to the certificate.

Are you using a 3rd party SSL certificate or a self-certified certificate?

I would imagine you are using a self-signed certificate and if that is the case, this certificate needs to be installed on the Windows Mobile phone.

If the certificate is from a 3rd party SSL certificate provider, then I expect the Windows Mobile phone does not know / trust the provider.

It is self created, but the certificate works for OWA? should it be something different?

No - it does not need to be different, but the security on a Windows mobile phone has stricter security than an iPhone or a Droid etc.

You need to install the certificate onto the phone and then it will be happy.

If you need guidance on how to do this, please let me know.

I think I might need some help, I'm just not sure how much. I've installed the cert so that I can sync with exchange when I'm plugged in to my desktop, so USB works, but when I try and change the server address to the one that we would use to access OWA from outside our company, it doesn't work. So when I go to set up activesync from my desktop, I ckeck the box that says set up active sync with exchange, and then for the server address, I type in the name of the actual server. It finds the server and words. When I try and type in the OWA address mail.company.net, it says it can't find the exchange server...

Are you trying to connect with Wi-Fi enabled? If so, I would turn it off. Once it is off, as long as mail.company.net resolves in DNS to the world, and you have port 443 open and forwarded on your firewall, it should resolve.

actually, to get to our Outlook web access, we have to go https://mail.company.net/exchange, not just mail.company.net. could this be my issue? The correct ports are open because we're able to use the webmail right?

That's fine for Web Access, but for Activesync, you don't put anything after the .net. No forward slash anything.

yea, for the server address, I just type in mail.company.net, and I have ssl checked. Then my normal username, password and domain. Should the username be domain/username? or just username? When I login to the webaccess, I have to do domain/username. With the above settings, I get a cannot connect error and my phone wants me to either change some settings or dismiss the error, which either way still doesn't allow the phone to connect.

Because you have a separate domain field, the username should only be the username, not domain/username.

Have you run the Exchange Activesync test at https://testexchangeconnectivity.com?

If not, run the test, specify manual server settings and tick the Ignore Trust for SSL as you have a self-signed certificate.

If the site says your Activesync is working properly, great, if not, please have a read of my blog article:

ok, so it says I'm having an issue with my certificate. This is what I'm getting from the activeSync tester:
A network error occurred while communicating with remote host
Exception details:
Message: Authentication failed because the remote party has closed the transport stream.
Type: System.IO.IOException
Stack trace:
at System.Net.Security.SslState.StartReadFrame(Byte[] buffer, Int32 readBytes, AsyncProtocolRequest asyncRequest)
at System.Net.Security.SslState.StartReceiveBlob(Byte[] buffer, AsyncProtocolRequest asyncRequest)
at System.Net.Security.SslState.ForceAuthentication(Boolean receiveFirst, Byte[] buffer, AsyncProtocolRequest asyncRequest)
at System.Net.Security.SslState.ProcessAuthentication(LazyAsyncResult lazyResult)
at System.Net.Security.SslStream.AuthenticateAsClient(String targetHost)
at Microsoft.Exchange.Tools.ExRca.Tests.SSLCertificateTest.PerformTestReally()

in my setup, if I only have a backend, what Certificate services should be installed? This was only installed on our attempted front end, but we're not trying to use that yet, so we're just trying to make everything work from the back end first.

on my phone, I'm enter the server as mail.company.net and for my username, its just my username, then password, then domain. I haven't touched any other settings. I've also tried to use domain\username and domain.net in my login info too, and that didn't work. The same settings as those from the exchange connectivity test didn't work on my phone.

Have you tried to sync different accounts, not just the one?

Sorry, I didn't read your last question correctly. I just dragged it to the phone, and then clicked on it. After which it said one or more certificates was installed.

That error suggests that it can't find the destination (fqdn) you have specified. Can you resolve the name to a website on your server from the phone?
