I'm setting up an IIS 7.5 website, using Visual Studio 2010, on a server with Exchange 2007. When I try to use the website to send mail, it generates an MSExchange Transport error:

Inbound authentication failed with error LogonDenied for Receive connector Default xxx. The authentication mechanism is Ntlm. The source IP address of the client who tried to authenticate to Microsoft Exchange is [xxx].

My question is about how I should authenticate?

In the web.config file I use a section like this
<smtp from="user@domain.com">
<network host="remote.domain.com" password="^dfeyfhcn" userName="user@domain.com"/>
</smtp>

And then, after creating the mail in the application, the mail is sent with this code:

private void SendTextMessage(string TextEmail, string TextName, string toAddress, string subject, string body)
{
MailAddress fromAdd = new MailAddress(TextEmail, TextName);
MailAddress toAdd = new MailAddress(toAddress);
MailMessage msg = new MailMessage(fromAdd, toAdd);
msg.Subject = subject;
msg.Body = body + "\n Sent: " + DateTime.Now.ToLongDateString() + " at " + DateTime.Now.ToLongTimeString() + " using ipaddress " + (Request.UserHostAddress) + "\n";
SmtpClient client = new SmtpClient();
client.Port = 25;
client.Send(msg);
}

Cam anyone guide me as to where my authentication is going wrong.

Well, I decided to remove and reinstall smtp and that got it going again. Sorry I can't provide more detail. Basically the account was able to authenticate as a domain user (not the network service) once the smtp part was going. At least that's my theory...
