Hello, I used to use Exchange 2007 SP1 with WinSrv 2003 R2 SP2 (x64). After applied SP2 for Exchange, the Active Directory topology service cannot start and all of Exchange service is not running and EvenLog said "coundn't find domain controller". Well, after a few research I found I obviously forgot to preparation I must do...it's "extending Schema". Now I tried to reinstall Exchange 2007, but when initiate installation, then error message said "The Exchange server is in an inconsistent state. Only server recovery mode is available." Now I tried to run the following command, but still no luck... I think I need to remove the Exchange and reinstall it on the same server, but I want to know this is correct approach or not. And if it is correct, then what about all of configuration and mailbox data will be? Will they be removed when the Exchange role was removed? or these config and mailbox is staying? Thank you for your help in advance, ===================== D:\ADMIN\SP1>setup /M:recoverserver Welcome to Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Unattended Setup Preparing Exchange Setup The following server roles will be recovered Hub Transport Role Client Access Role Mailbox Role Management Tools Performing Microsoft Exchange Server Prerequisite Check Hub Transport Role Checks ......................... If installation fails, the failed server information will be present in AD. Which wont allow to install until the information are cleared. You should remove the Server information from Active Directory using ADSIEDIT and reinstall using proper steps 1. First modification in AD Raise functional level and any old exchange server if present in the environment 2. preparation 3. Installation

Thanks, clementrosario. Please blame my impatience... After I posted, I tried setup command from SP2 setup folder. 1. "setup /mode:PrepareSchema" --> completed! 2. "setup /mode:PrepareAD" --> completed! Now I tried "setup /mode:recoverserver" then I got same error message as I posted before and stucked again. just in case, I tried "upgrade" switch, but same result...failed. Should I edit the version number using ADSIedit.msc? Also I found one article that mentioned change the registry keys and remove any watermark values in the subkyes of HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\v8.0 + change the ConfiguredVersion and UnpackedVersion back to the pre-SP2 values. What do you think this approach? Any comments and reply would be much appreciated.
