Hi All,
I have an enormously frustrating issue when attempting to upgrade exchange 2007 from SP2 to SP3.
Everything goes well until it is part way through the Mailbox role when it throws an error;
The error code was 3221685221. The message was Overlapped I/O operation is in progress..
Below is a snippet from the exchange log where the problem begins.

I have searched the net for similar issues and the closest i got was someone who had the same issue with Ex 2010. It was suggested to give 'everyone' permissions temporarily to C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Mailbox which i did but made no difference. Ditto to removing the watermark key from;
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\v8.0\MailboxRole]

I am logged on the the administrator for the record. I also tried manually stopping all the exchange services plus IIS, www publishing & stopped our AV whilst the upgrade ran.
Exchange is running on Server 2008 x64 STD and has sole use of the server. The server isnt running as a DC either.
At the moment I am stumped and cannot successfully upgrade to SP3. Luckily exchange is still running OK but i want to get to the bottom of this.
Any help would be MUCH appeciated.

Yes, the account I am using is indeed a memeber of the schema admins group.

i dont know if this helps...but i found this on one of the forums..
"I had a Windows 2003, Exchange 2007 box running hub transport, client access, and mailbox roles. When upgrading to SP3 (Direct from SP1) The upgrade's to hub transport and client access completed ok, however the Mailbox role upgrade failed with the error "An error occurred. The error code was 3221684229. The message was Access is denied..".
I looked in the Exchangesetup.log and found several Access Denied entry's for "f:\08.03.0083\sources\dev\admin\src\libs\base\basemisc.cxx:1353"; this made no sense as the f:\ drive only contained log files.
I re-ran SP3 setup, whilst monitoring it with Sysinternals Process Monitor and found a single Access Denied was logged, this was for a \Device\HarddiskVolume4\. I found that the \Device\HarddiskVolume4\ volume was mounted in a folder under the OWA IIS folder (In this instance: C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\ClientAccess\Owa). I removed this volume and then ran the setup again, this time SP3 installed correctly.
I've posted this in case anyone else has this issue, as it is not apparent from the initial error message or Exchangesetup.log that the cause of this Mailbox role upgrade error lie's within the ClientAccess folder."
