Exchange 2000 to 2007 Migration problems - 28.Jul.2010 3:48:11 PM

I’m helping a friend with an Exchange 2000 to 2007 migration and we’ve run into an issue where users with mailboxes on the Exchange 2007 can’t receive mail from users on the 2000 server or from the internet. All mail for the users on the 2007 server get built up in a connector queue on the 2000 server.

Here are more details about the setup and issue:

- Exchange 2000 running on Windows 2000
- Exchange 2007 is running on Windows 2008 Standard Server. Hub Transport role only. There’s no Edge server
- Both servers are on the same subnet and there’s also a Windows 2003 DC/GC on the same subnet.
- We have automatically created connectors going form the 2000 routing group to the 2007 routing group.
- Email to the internet goes out through a connector on the Exchange 2000 server. (It does go to a smart host, but we’ve tried removing the smart host and the results are the same.)
- There is a queue on the 2000 server where mail destined for recipients on Exchange 2007 builds up.
- Users on the 2000 box can send to the internet, to recipients on the 2000 server, but not to recipients on the 2007 box.
- Users with mailboxes on the 2007 box can send to other users on the 2007 box, users on the 2000 box and to the internet.

Here are things we’ve tried (which haven’t worked):

- Disabled/uninstalled antivirus.
- Deleted the default routing group connectors created by the install of 2007 and created new connectors.
- Enabled anonymous relay permission to the Receive Connectors on the 2007 server.
- Disabled Link State on the Exchange 2000 server.
- Disabled firewall on the Exchange 2007 server.
- Ensured the 2000 server is a member of the Exchange Legacy Interop group (or whatever the exact name is)
- Tested connectivity on port 25 on the Exchange 2007 server.
- Deleted all connectors on both the 2000 and 2007 servers and uninstalled/reinstalled the Hub Transport role on Exchange 2007.
- Enabled verbose logging on the receive connectors on the 2007 server to see if we’re seeing mail from the 2000 server, but nothing gets logged.
- In order to test connectivity between the two servers, we removed the SMTP connector to the internet and just tested connectivity between 2000 and 2007 (to ensure the 2000 server wasn’t trying to send the mail to the 2007 server via the internet). In all cases, 2007 can send to 2000, but mail from 2000 to 2007 builds up in the queue for the connector between the two servers and eventually times out but is never delivered.
- Ideally, we’d like mail to the internet from the 2000 server to go through a smart host, but have removed that in the past with no difference.

Anyone have any ideas? I’ve not had these issues with migrations from 2003 to 2007, but this one has us stymied. I can provide more info if any of this is unclear.

did you get any solutions to your problem?
I am suffering, what reads like anyway, a similar problem and banging my head against a wall.
Any help you can share is very much appreciated.
Many thanks, Damian
