hello.. if i have 3 different office locations (chicago, london and sydney)..but are all part of the same domain. All are currently E2K7 SP1. Can i only upgrade one site ...UK to SP3. Will it affect any flow or intraoperability with the other offices? And UK is proxying the webmail for Sydney...how will that be affected? if any.

And it seems like the AD extensions are mainly for Unified Messaging from what I have read so far? or is there more to it than that?

Thanks for your time and efforts.

I do not recommend it. Issues always arise when you have Exchange running different levels of service pack especially in different locations. When installing SP for Exchange, Microsoft recommends always updating the internet-facing site first.

Why would you not want to update all your servers to SP3?

The SP does not only include AD extensions for the schema (you WILL have to upgrade your schema for exchange Service pack installs!!), it also includes fixes and patches for the applications!

well its just that one site...UK..needs to move over to new hardware and they want to install Server 2008R2.

And would you do it all at the same time? but I'm guessing in a phased approach. I just want to make sure that if one site is on SP3 the other sites dont have issues relaying mail to them or vice versa.

As mentioned, you may have issue if the UK site is NOT your internet facing site! So think about this carefully. Why not just move them to new hardware and keep them at the same SP level they are on right now?! After that you can plan for an SP3 upgrade properly.

all the sites are internet facing... but mail flow does come from uk to chicago and leaves out of chicago... but our plan now will be to just upgrade all to SP3.

Thanks again...and last question..

do we have to use the setup.com to upgrade to sp3? or can we do it via the Setup wizard? according to this article.. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb691226(EXCHG.80).aspx

it is saying to do it the same way as sp1 to sp2...or am I wrong to assume that? in the lab I was able to use the wizard and go directly from SP1 to SP3...

ok a couple more things...

the upgrade from SP1 to SP3 requires no additional AD schema changes then the ones listed? I mean since I am skipping SP2 ...will it make those changes as well...whatever was in SP2?

And from the readings there are no Schema changes in SP2...am I safe to assume that?

And if for to upgrade a clustered mailbox server do I need to use upgradecms.exe? or will the wizard take care of all that?

all these management questions. :)

Thank you!
