Can you describe your Exchange 2010 setup. Are you 100% sure that DNS is set up correctly and that the Exchange server can see the Active Directory and Global Catalogue?

Did anything change before this issue occured? what file level rights are on the database and folder? Edit: ow and just in case, do you have any AD Access or other events in the application log logged as an error?

Environment: Exchange 2003 ready for moving mailboxes to Exchange 2010 but can't mount database. Installation was successful, file level rights on database/folder set for administrator with full control. All MS Exchange services running correctly. I enabled diagnostic logging on MS IS service and receive the following error :- Exchange Search Indexer failed to enable the Mailbox Database x (GUID = 8e4f61b3-6763-4d1f-b43d-2e09c1cfc367) after 1 tries. The last failure was: MapiExceptionMdbOffline: Unable to Get Catalog State (hr=0x80004005, ec=1142) Diagnostic context: Lid: 1494 ---- Remote Context Beg ---- Lid: 44215 Lid: 60049 StoreEc: 0x8004010F Lid: 49469 Lid: 65341 StoreEc: 0x8004010F Lid: 56125 Lid: 47933 StoreEc: 0x8004010F Lid: 32829 Lid: 49213 StoreEc: 0x8004010F Lid: 48573 Lid: 64957 StoreEc: 0x8004010F Lid: 31321 StoreEc: 0x476 Lid: 1750 ---- Remote Context End ---- Lid: 19154 StoreEc: 0x476

This is a LONG shot but what happens if you disable the Microsoft Exchange Search Indexer service and delete the Search Index. I can't imagine a corrupt search index would stop the mailbox store from mounting but crazier things have happened.

It sounds more like your issue is file based permissions issue...the search indexer error is just stating that it cannot index the database that is offline. Just to make sure..you're not trying to take the actual EDB file from the 03 server and mount it on the 2010 server, correct? I would try granting 'everyone' full control over the DB and log folder that wont mount...see if you can then mount the DB.

Have you tried running Setup.com/PrepareAD again? I have seen issues where permissions need to be reset in the domain.

Ran this on a command line and it started saying "running unattended installation" then gets to 100% complete for copy setup files and then the dos window closes?!?! Is there another way?

I would suggest uninstalling the mailbox role, running setup /prepad and then setup /prepschema again, then reinstall the mailbox role. The error indicates that indexing is enabled on the DB, but it either couldn't start or is corrupted.
