I am using exchange server 2007, I am only using its SMTP to send emails while i am using pop of my hosted server.
Everything works fine but suddenly my SMTP stops working, at the same time when its stop working the ping response is ok, but telnet to smtp port 25 gives an error "Could not open connection to the host, on port 25 connection failed". and after this i am not able to send any emails. My outlook shows an error "unknown error".
I have telnet it from localhost as well as from other systems on the network but the problem remains same.
This is happening almost on regular basis. when i restarts my server everything works fine. no error are shown.
I would also like to include that my Firewall is disabled and i have Anti virus which is allowing SMTP connection.

What type of antivirus do you have running on the server? When this problem happens, instead of rebooting the server, have you tried stopping the antivirus services and seeing if the server responds? Any errors or warnings related to transport or SMTP showing up when the issue occurs?
