I know it is recommended to have an equal number of mailstores across storage groups but is there also a best practice that states mailstore size should be equal across storage groups? Will doing so result in a noticeable performance gain?

Thanks!

Performance is not directly linked to mail store size.  There is no magic formula.  Performance is influenced by many factors not related to store size.
