I was asked to help a friend who's Exchange server crashed and he had no usable backup to restore from. When I tried to reinstall Exchange on a new server I got tons of errors when I test with dcdiag. The exch server was also a dc and held the maaster schema and all the other relevant roles. I have addressed those issues but now I'm at a loss on whether to install exchange on the server in a workgroup with a new name or add it to the domain and then install exchange either clean or without /disasterrcover recover switch to get the user info from AD. I'm hoping to push the mailboxes to the mail store.

I'm not well veresed in Exchange or AD so any help will be appreciated.

P.S. Everything I've done to date has been from information garnered from this and other sites. SCARY!!!

This is scary. Do you have the original hard drives? If the databases are on them there are utilities that can mount them depending on the scenario.

Here's a solution to keep it from happening again. Please check out: http://mymanagedbackup.com/index.php/exchange-backup
