Advice - Reclaiming space from First Storage Group - 6.Jan.2011 10:41:18 AM

Good day all,
I am looking for a little advice on the best steps to take. I have an Exchange 2003 active/passive cluster that I recently inherited. I have 4 Storage Groups each on their own partition/disk. The First Storage Groups has one mailbox store. This mailbox store has 200GB of whitespace but the drive only 50GB of free space. I want to reclaim this whitespace for obvious reasons. I cannot afford much downtime or any major complications if they can be avoided. From my research I understand that an offline defrag wouldn't be the best option. In fact, the best option seems to be to move the mailboxes to another store in another storage group and delete the large mailbox store. As this is the only store in the FSG I am a little wary/hesitant. I have already begun moving the mailboxes to another storage group. Do I need to create another mailbox store under the first storage group before deleting the original? (The public folders are also on the same partition as the first storage group. I am not sure if these will be affected by deleting the mailbox store in first storage group.) As this is the store with the System attendent mailbox, SMTP mailbox, and System Mailbox what is the affect of taking it offline and deleting it? How do I ensure that these are properly and quickly recreated? Thank you!

After you finish moving all of the mailboxes out of that Mailbox Store, delete the MS but not the Storage Group. You can then delete the database files (EDB and STM).  You can then create a new MS in that SG if you wish and move mailboxes in.
