I have a user who, on any computer, on any version of Outlook, gets this error...
“Cannot open your default email folders. You must connect to Microsoft Exchange with the current profile before you can synchronize your folders with your Outlook data file (.ost).” (slightly different error on Outlook 2003).
She can open her mailbox in OWA.
I tried moving her mailbox to another store and disabling and re-enabling MAPI for her account. I have 1200 users and she is the only person with this issue so I know it is not a server connectivity issue.
What are my options at this point? To export her mailbox and then reimport it back into the Exchange server? Am I look at some level or corruption? Permissions.
Thanks in advance.

Generally that error is when Outlook cannot resolve the user in the OAB or GAL for mailbox resolution.

Are you able to create a new outlook profile with cached mode disabled?

I have turned off caching and left RPC Encryption enabled (Outlook 2003) and it goes further but now I get the error...
"Unable to open your default e-mail folders. The Microsoft Exchange Server computer is not available. Either there are network problems or the Microsoft Exchange Server computer is down for maintenance."
I did an RPC diag and it appears to be connecting to my CAS. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Can you provide the output of

get-mailbox "username" | fl

It sounds like the user is hidden from the GAL or the OAB doesnt have a reference to the user

Here you go. I italicized the line (protocol settings) that looks different than other working mailboxes. Her mailbox appears to be in the GAL though. Thanks for your help with this...

This sounds more like a mail box that is looking for some *.pst files from archival or personal folders that aren't in their indicated locations.

If this error shows up on every computer this user tries then most likely the pst files are completely gone and you have to remove their references on at least one workstation.

With the user logged in, close Outlook and go to the Control Panel and select "Mail". Then click on the "Data files" button.

Make sure the outlook.ost file is set as the default and then remove all other references to any PST files.

Exit the tool, and then restart Outlook on that workstation. It should then open, without any more errors about data files.

If you have roaming profiles activated, this problem should then clear itself as that user logs into the other computers, otherwise you will have to do the same on each workstation or delete that users profile from all the other computers before the user reconnects.

If there are no PST files and the problem persists, then you have check how and where Outlook is saving the OST files for that user to ensure the person has full access to the data file location.

Thank you to both Rastor9 and sheldon.travis. Yesterday when I ran the get mailbox command I noticed that her x400 address was messed up. Her first and last name were in the the surname field. I changed that and then this morning when I went to follow Rastor9's directions I noticed that I could now open her mailbox. I did nothing other than that. I am glad it is working now but frustrated because I doubt that was the problem. Any thoughts about improperly formated X400 addresses? Thanks again for your help on this.

Try this link, http://blog.mpecsinc.ca/2011/06/outlook-error-cannot-open-your-default.html
This might be helpful.
You can even try to re-export the mailbox back into the exchange server. Try Lepide Exchange Manager. Through this tool you can easily restore the mailbox directly into the Live Exchange Environment.

What you could du, is to copy the LegacyExchangeDN attribute from AD, and insert it as the X.400 address.

Make sure to back up the attributes before you begin.

I think that if you are opting for a manual method then it might take a long time in getting the things done perfectly. For easy and quick repair and recovery of the corrupt OST files I can suggest you a utility tool which worked greatly for me. Besides this it also restored in my OST to the PST format so that I was able to have the access of the mailboxes without the Exchange account. For more details you can go to :- http://www.osttopstconverter.****-****.com/

There are several causes behind this error, such as incorrect configuration, corruption of Outlook profile, corrupt OST file, Oversize, etc. As you have already tried all possible tricks, also try to create new profile and repair OST file with help of ScanOST tool.

Please go through this web-link to check more detail about this method: http://www.recoveryfix.com/blog/why-not-to-worry-even-if-errors-have-been-detected-in-ost-file/

If this doesn't work, then you should try Recoveryfix for OST to PST to export damaged OST file data into PST format.
