Having an issue with some mail getting stuck in the Queue, staying in Retry status... this is only happening for a handful of recipient domains (but the same domains). We have one Exchange 2003 server which I administer; I have only just noticed this happening and I can't think of anything that has changed on the server.

I am receiving the following NDR:
someone@example.com on date and time
Could not deliver the message in the time limit specified. Please retry or contact your administrator.
(server.contoso.com #4.4.7)

I have checked the MSFT KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/329636 and all my setting appear correct (the article is for EX2000 but similar) - PS. We use DNS

I have also received this NDR:
This is the mail delivery agent at messagelabs.com.
I was not able to deliver your message to the following addresses.

<someone@example.com>:
Connected to x.x.x.x but connection died. (#4.4.2)

Despite repeated attempts, this message could not be delivered.


I can't figure out what maybe happening – can some please shed some light on this problem?

I was having problems with some emails that were sending a time out message (not delivered because it timed out), but yet the recipients still received the message only two days later. We use Exchange 2003/Server 2003 as well. Please check your DNS's Reverse Lookup zone. I found where our primary domain controller's IP address was 'unknown' but the secondary DC had the IP defined. I put in the primary DC's IP and then we did not have anymore time out messages for those specific email addresses. It was only those certain emails and others went through just fine. Anyway, check your DNS reverse lookups and make sure they are defined correctly for your DCs.

Thanks for your reply.

I've logged on to the primary (2k3) and secondary (2k8) DNS servers and checked both; the mail servers ip address exists correctly within the reverse dns zone for both... Is this what you suggested i checked?

Any other suggestions anyone?

Everything you have in your log excerpts indicates the message got through.  Are those the transmissions that are failing?  Also, include the QUIT command after the DATA command when analyzing SMTP logs.

I have spoken to the recipients and the messages are not getting through.

I think we are getting somewhere; Looking at the logs.. There is no QUIT command after the DATA command on the ones that are failing. Any idea why that would be and could that be the cause?

Here is another extract as is in the logs... i have taken the emails from either side to show they are sending correctly and have added a blank line around each email to make easier to read.

Status: offline 		The DATA command is different than the other SMTP commands in that the end of the command is not defined by the parameters.

What I mean by that is the DATA command is followed by the contents of the message and not just the sending or recipient address.  The recipient SMTP system assumes that all transmitted information following the DATA command is part of the message until your system sends (and their system receives) a single period character between carriage return characters.

The most obvious cause of this would be that your system isn't sending that termination character, or that the recipient system for some reason isn't recognizing your termination character.

The QUIT command will only be issued after your system ends the DATA command and gets an acknowledgment.

What if anything is different about the messages you send that fail?  If the commonality is that it's always the same recipient system, I'd suggest you reach out to the Administrators of that system to see if they can review their SMTP logs of your transmission to them.

It turns out it was specific to the message/s (seemed corrupt somehow) and only a handful of recipients wouldn't properly accept it. I redesign the template and now all works.
