I've done some reading on this issue and it's not necessarily any clearer than mud - just like before.

When setting up an Outlook user, if we use Outlook 2007/2010 and allow it to autosetup the Outlook profile based on the user logon name, etc... inevitably, it gets setup as an Outlook Anywhere client and uses the setting "Only connect to proxy servers..." with a value of "msstd:webmail.externaldomainname.com".

This works for the user(s) initially, then eventually it causes repeated password prompts in Outlook that will not resolve. I get the general idea that this is related to certificates where the server names the cert(s) is issued to have a different internal domain name than the cert principle name, and this doesn't jibe with the msExchAutoDiscoverCertPrincipalName value.
We cannot use our internal domain name on our certs because we do not own the rights to the domain. As far as I know, we will never be able to change our internal domain name. I don't know how to fix this because I am lost in all the information and don't know how to make sense of it. Any help is appreciated!
