We are lookig to install Exchange 2010 on a server we originally purchased for Hyper-V. I did not realize Unified Messaging would not work in a Virtual environment so now I'm rethinking the install.

The server is an HP Proliant DL380 G7 with 12gb memory. How bad of an idea would it be to install Exchange 2010 on a server with Hyper-V roles that may end up hosting 2 or 3 Virtual Servers. These would be low resource machines running 1 call accounting app, 1 running linux based Help Desk with MySQL and maybe 1 other with 1 app. Not takig up more the 1gb of memory for each and minimal processing power.

Can I expect Exchange to take a performance hit with a 2 processor, 12gb system?

It isn't supported to run Exchange on the Hyper-V root machine.

It might work in the technical sense, but I would anticipate performance issues as well as support issues if you ever ran into problems and needed Microsoft's help.

Only management software (for example, antivirus software, backup software, or virtual machine management software) can be deployed on the physical root machine. No other server-based applications (for example, Exchange, SQL Server, Active Directory, or SAP) should be installed on the root machine. The root machine should be dedicated to running guest virtual machines.
