leekum -> Personal Folders missing in Outlook 2010 (5.May2011 4:29:01 PM)

I have a user whose personal folders are now missing from the left panel in Outlook 2010. Any way to retrieve them on the server side in Exchange?

Thanks,

What folders are missing?  All folders or just ones he/she created?

Unless the mailstore has some corruption [gulp] they are simply missing because of a user action.  Either they deleted the folders or most likely they moved them under another sub-folder.  Before you dig too deep into Exchange, have the user search by some specific keywords.

I certainly do not want to discountt your troubleshooting but my experience has always shown me 'misplaced' folders.  I get a lot of these requests from our help desk only to find the folder moved under another folder.

If the user deleted the folder, you still may be able to find them in the dumpster.

Please report back.  I will provide some more technical assistance if you still need it.

All folders user created to move some of her emails into. I will followup with the user and look at her Outlook if I get a chance. I came from a Lotus background so any troubleshooting tips is definitely appreciated.

How is the outlook configured with exchange server. In POP3 Mode or Online exchange mode or cached exchange mode.

Open the user account via web access and check if the missing folders are available there ?

Just a shot in the dark here ... but they are not called Personal folders in Outlook 2010 ... I think Outlook shows them up as "My data" or "my folder" I can't remember. Perhaps the user just can't find the old name.

Did you search for the 'missing' folder yet? If so, what did you find?

My default Outlook PST file is located here:
C:\Users\Joh\Documents\Outlook Files\Outlook.pst
And my other pst files are here:
C:\Users\Joh\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\

All of which have many previous versions, few from a complete Windows backup and most from restore points. Checked by right clicking on the file and clicking Properties, then going to the Previous Version tab.

This is a default, I haven't modified the settings at all.

If you use the Import utility in Outlook you can choose to overwrite duplicates.

There are two main reasons for the personal folder missing, either you have accidentally deleted the PST file or your antivirus scans and removed the folder.
You can get back your PST file by using ScanPST.exe or any third party tool.
