Hi Exchange Guru's,

We have this issue more than 24 hours now. Our Exchange2007 holds the e-mail in its queue and it doesn't allow the clients (OWA, Outlook 2003, 2007, 2010) to connect to it. We have now over 40,000 e-mails in the queue. We had all the the Windows updates installed and it' running in Win2003 Srv 64-bit box. If we restart the server it would allow to connect and forward e-mails to recipient for a short period of time maybe less than 3 minutes then it would not allow any connections back again. Is anyone of you have had this type of issue before? All comments or ideas are welcome. Thanks a million.

Are you using any antivirus software for scanning your queues that might be having some issues, and hence has stopped your queues. Check the event logs on your Exchange Hub servers for that.

No, we are not using any anti virus software at this server. We have barracuda that we use to filter our incoming and outgoing e-mails.
Checked the Hub transport and there is nothing really unusual that's going on.
Thanks.

What are you doing for file level AV scanning?

Is this impacting internal emails, external emails or both?

All are clients have anti virus installed in their workstations.

It affects both external and internal e-mails. If we restart the server, it releases a couple of e-mails and after that it holds the e-mail again in the queue. Thanks.

Try pausing the Exchange Transport Service. This should allow the messages in the queue to drain without allowing any new messages into the queues. Are messages still entering the queue? You have to act quickly before you ran out of space. Also, do you have a second HT server? If so, you could move the queue database from the bad server to another one.

We had done that and still having the same issues.

We have found the solution and we ran out of white space. Our Exchange edb file is 178gig and we had only 18gig of white space available in our Exchange server. FYI, please make sure you follow the "15% Rule of Thumb" for white space. We increased the available size in our drive and everything is back to normal again.

Thanks to all folks who contributed their ideas and willingness to help other IT Admin out there. More power to you... Thanks again!

A few questions for the class.......

guyforkes = are you sure the messages drain from the Transport queue when the queue is paused? My experience has shown that if the Transport queue is paused it does not accept new connections but does NOT drain existing messages.

CalMickyPhil = I don't see how whitespace on a mailbox server impacts message delivery. Whitespace is a luxury only if items are purged from the mailbox store databases. If your database continue to grow over time (which is normal and expected) you would have very little or no whitespace at all. Even if you were talking about free space on the drive, message delivery should not be impacted until you have 20mb (two reserve log files). Please explain the 15% whitespace rule of thumb.

CalMickyPhil (again) = do you have any AV scanning on your Exchange servers? File level is necessary but be sure to exclude the specific Exchange folders. There are many different ways you can get viruses on your Exchange servers without touching your Barracuda. Too risky in my opinion.

There is monitoring for % free disk space available and the server does not allow sending any more mails if it hit the thershold and normally an event will be logged in that regard just before it stops. That's why making more space available resolved the problem. Don't be fooled by the available space as this is based on the % of the total disk i.e you might get the problem whilst you have 3G available
