I am using the import and export feature in Outlook 2003 to make maiboxes to a pst , since Exmerge limit is 2 gig. Do i have to wait until all items in the mailbox update before i export? Some of theses Mailboxes takes hours to update, and that is a lot of time to be waiting just to export it to a pst. i would appreciate your feedback.
This problem can be resolved easily by using a third party edb to pst conversion software like Stellar Phoenix EDB to PST Converter. There is no pst file size limitation issue with this tool. Completely remove all limitations (specially which you mentioned) with the help of commercial tools. I am using a very inexpensive and feature-rich (bulk export, no size limit etc) app that had deployed from a software company. Application is superb to do exporting of large sized mailboxes as speed is very high.
For archiving Exchange mailboxes there is defiantly no need to mess up with Exchange server. You can do it directly with Exmerge but Exmerge has still some limitation. You can go for some automated applications to get instant & harmless results.

Although both way are right to get exchange mailboxes into pst format but both will take few issues:
Exmerge is best way to directly export all mailboxes to pst file (in exchange 2003) and no need to update but it has limit of 2 gb, bulk export, require permissions and settings etc.
Exporting exchange mailboxes to pst using MS Outlook is also good way but these are the few circumstances:
• If mailbox sizes are large, it will take time to download the whole items (As you told for updating) • If few accounts are not configured, you cannot backup those accounts data • If data size will grow (more than 4gb) there are complete chances for ms outlook will not be responding or ost corruption • Large size of mailboxes will also take more time to exporting mailboxes into pst (Using Import and Export function of MS Outlook)
To avoid all these circumstances and get error-free exporting of exchange mailboxes to pst file, calling for 3rd parties apps is wise decision. Only desired application should be very reliable.
