I'm wondering if I can have Exchange 2007 + IIS 6 SMTP Virtual Server + Visendo SMTP Extender for POP all running on the same 2008 R2 server.

My organisation needs to be able to offer both Exchange & POP mailboxes (POP for teams with high staff turnovers with shared 'team' mailboxes because this way Outlook will happily remember the password for the mailbox and we don't need to change the password everytime a team member leaves the organisation).

Our current setup is that our emails are user@a.com and we have a domain which is www.a.com, which is hosted by a company called Fashosts who provide POP & mail-forwarding.  We leave the POP mailboxes in fast hosts and for all other mail we use the forwarders to forward from user@a.com to user@b.com, as www.b.com is our Exchange server which we manage on-site.  In exchange we have the primary & reply email addresses for the @b.com Exchange accounts changed to reflect the @a.com addresses.  I have never liked this setup much as it involves a lot of retyping email addresses and as the number of exchange accounts in use has increased its started to seem a bit unwieldy.  Also I suppose there could be future SPF implications, and ultimately it just seems like a complex way of doing something fairly simple.

An opportunity is coming this summer where I could potentially point www.a.com at our exchange server and just have all mail delivered directly, except that we still need to have POP mailboxes available for some @a.com addresses.

I considered using Visendo for POP but I’m not sure how this would actually work – how would incoming mail know whether it should be handled by Exchange or Visendo?

Is this the wrong approach?  Any advice appreciated!

Don't know how I missed this:

For some reason I had thought that POP3 had been deprecated from Exchange after 2003, which is why I was looking at Visendo.
