I have an exchange 2003 server, and just added a exchange 2007 server. They are both up to date with service packs and hotfixes. I'm starting to migrate mailboxes, but I'm having a problem with IIS redirects from one server to the other. When a 2007 user hits the 2003 OWA it tries to redirect him to the other server. It actually redirects to the FQDN, giving a certificate error internally and a 'page cannot be displayed' externally. Internally if you continue past the certificate error it finishes the redirect properly. with a valid cert. The 2003 server is named exchange.domain.local - internally mail.domain.com - externally the 2007 server is named mail.domain.local - internally mail2.domain.com - externally I do have a forward lookup zone for domain.com with the appropriate external names pointed to their local IPs. I tried tweaking the DNS of the 2003 server to append domain.com, but that just caused a redirect loop presumably because instead of trying to go from mail.domain.com to mail.domain.local it tried going from mail.domain.com to mail.domain.com

from your description here your design is wrong. The 2003 users CAN hit a 2007 box and be directed to the right OWA on the 2003 box. However, the 2007 users CANNOT go to a 2003 box and be redirected. Your OWA box (the CAS role) has to be the most recent version of Exchange.

That's odd because internally 2007 users access the 2003 box and are redirected. It makes a intermediary hope to the fqdn before finding the right spot, but it works. And when a 2003 user access the 2007 server they get an error message stating that 'The mailbox cannot be found...The mailbox may be stored on a Microsoft Exchange 2000 or Microsoft Exchange 2003 server' What can be done to fix this?

They will be redirected and because they can see the 2003 box internally they get sent to that box and the 2003 box is no longer involved. From the Internet they can only hit the one URL and everything must go through that box. Bottom line, your design is not valid for Internet > 2003 FE > 2007 MBX. You have to have Internet > 2007 CAS > 2003 BE and 2007 MBS.

I was using /owa instead of /exchange. /exchange gives me access to both servers.

Ignore all of that. The bottom line, end of it all fact, a fact to end all facts, is that your 2007 users cannot hit a 2003 FE on the Internet and get to their internal 2007 server. I know all about the /owa and the /exchange and the internal redirection and that's all perfectly fine. What you cannot escape from is that if you want to use Outlook Web Access from the Internet then all your traffic needs to his a 2007 CAS before getting proxied through to the 2003 box on the inside.

That makes sense, but I just tested this from the outside, and it isn't working. the 2003 user just gets a page cannot be displayed.

Set it up like this. Internet > Exchange 2007 CAS/HT only > Exchange 2003 BE and Exchange 2007 MBX Only role. That's the correct way to do it and there are a bunch of articles on this website that you can use to configure the CAS and certificates etc. etc.

I've looked through a lot of different articles and forum posts, but I ran in to a road block here. I'm not able to get OWA working correctly from the outside world. I only found out about the /exchange from http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2007/02/07/3399727.aspx That got me pretty far, but I am at a loss as to why this works internally, and not externally. Only after a lot of searching and reading did I join this forum to see if I could get help with this final issue.
