abdulbasit01 -> Exchange Database Limit issue (22.Sep.2011 11:46:42 PM)

Hi,

I am running MS Exchange 2003 Std SP2 with Win2k3 SP2.
my exchange database is already exceeding the limit. its almost 79.6GB(EDB,STM). On daily basis at 5:00am morning information store was stuck and users are not getting emails. I am restarting information store service then emails are working.

Please help me in this regards. Here are some Event logs.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Event ID: 9175

The MAPI call 'OpenMsgStore' failed with the following error:
The attempt to log on to the Microsoft Exchange Server computer has failed.
The MAPI provider failed.
Microsoft Exchange Server Information Store
ID no: 8004011d-0512-00000000
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Event ID: 9685

Exchange store 'First Storage Group\Mailbox Store (XXXXXXX)': The current physical size of this database (the .edb file and the .stm file) is 78 GB. This database has exceeded the size limit of 75 GB. However, the logical free space in this database has not yet been evaluated. Therefore, it is possible that this database contains enough free space to bring its logical size below the maximum size limit.

If the logical database size exceeds the maximum size limit, it will be dismounted on a regular basis.

You will have to decrease the size of Database, that's the only option you have.
1: Check the event id 1221 in application log and check how much space you will get after you run the offline defrag.
2: If you don't see the enough space in 1221 than you will have to mount the database with blank (Empty Database). Create the RSG and merge the mailboxes.
Note: Do not merge all the mailboxes as you will find your self at the same place after the merge.

I would recommend you migrate to 2010. Or at least do a in place upgrade of Exchange 2003 to Enterprise.

Now i am planning to offline defrag next weekend.... ita almost 80GB. how many hours/days that will take??

Server Specs:

The event you have posted is for Public Folder Store, check for Mailbox Store and post it.

Defrag runs at the speed of 6-8 GB per hour.

Dated: 24/09/2011
Event ID: 1221
Source:    MSExchangeIS Mailbox
The database "First Storage Group\Mailbox Store (XXXXXX)" has 333 megabytes of free space after online defragmentation has terminated.

Running Defrag won't help here.
The option you have is Blank mount and merge the database(mailboxes) as per my first post.

Shall i upgrade to Enterprise as this moment??

Hi,

Me too have an issue about Database current size VS. Mailbox actual size.

There are 4 Mailboxes in a Mailbox Store and the Total actual size of all 4 Mailboxes is 22GB in size, in the Database( .edb shows 120.5GB and .stm shows 10.3GB) in size.

What could be the problem?

Any Advice?

OS > MS Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition SP2
OS Version > 5.2.3790
RAM > 4GB
MS Exchange 2003 Enterprise Edition ver. 6.5 Build 7638.2 SP2

Thanks.

-Mikel

By deleting mails from mailbox doesn’t decrease the database size instead this will create whitespace and then you need to defragment the database using eseutil /d. But the best possible solution is to set the database size limit instead [https://tipsforexchange.wordpress.com/2015/05/02/how-to-set-exchange-database-size-limit/] to avoid database dismounting and over sized problem.
