Hello all.

I'm doing my first Exchange 2007 install in an existing Exchange 2003 environment. Very simple setup here. I only had one 2003 server and I have deployed a single 2007 server with all the necessary roles.

So the layout is:

Server1 - Exchange 2003
Server2 - Exchange 2007

I have made no changes at all to the routing groups or administrative groups that were created during the install. As of now, I can deliver email from the Server2 (Exch2007) to Server1 (Exch2003), but I get System Administrator failures when trying to send from 2003 to 2007.

Using the following article I found:

http://itprosecure.com/blogs/exchange_2007_administration/archive/2009/01/19/exchange-2007-understanding-the-routing-group-connector-between-an-exchange-2003-and-exchange-2007-messaging-environment.aspx

I looked at the configurations of the connectors listed in the Exchange 2003 Administrative Group as well as the 2007 Administrative Group and compared mine to what is shown on that site.

On the connector listed beneath the Exchange 2003 Administrative Group, on the 'General' tab, I see the Exchange 2003 server listed in the 'These servers can send mail over this connector' box. However, on the 'Remote Bridgehead' tab of the same connector, I don't see any servers listed.

At the same time, on the connector listed beneath the Exchange 2007 Administrative Group, on the 'General' tab, I have no servers listed in the 'These servers can send mail over this connector' box, and on the 'Remote Bridgehead' tab, I have the Exchange 2003 server listed.

So, that sounds like these connectors are functioning in a bi-directional way.

Problem is, I can't edit either of the connectors. When I look at the properties in the 2003 ESM, I get an error saying ESM 8.0. something is needed to edit the object. I don't see the connectors on the Exchange 2007 side ESM.

Can somebody walk me through how to correct this?

Thanks.

Hi,

Please open the Exchange Management Shell and run the following command:

get-routinggroupconnector

This will show the connector, once you verified they are there remove them:

get-routingroupconnector | remove-routinggroupconnector

This will remove both routing group connectors. When completed create a new routing group connector between Exchange 2003 and 2007:

New-RoutingGroupConnector -Name "Interop RGC" -SourceTransportServers "Ex2007Hub1.contoso.com" -TargetTransportServers "Ex2003BH1.contoso.com" -Cost 100 -Bidirectional $true

Besides this please verify the settings on the default smtp server on the Exchange 2003 side. If a smarthost is defined here this also could cause strange issue.

Regards,
Johan
