Hi...

Recently we upgraded to Exchange 2010 SP2. We still have Exchange 2007 SP3 in our domain. (Both servers are in a single domain with one DC and one GC) We have plenty of mailboxes, so thought to have an Exchange 2007 & 2010 coexistence setup until we move all mailboxes to Exchange 2010.

Installation of Exchange 2010 went fine... (Both 2007 and 2010 servers has CAS, HT and MB server roles installed) I'm able to send and receive mails from internal to internet and internet to internal without any problem. I was able to send from 2010 to 2007 internal but not the other way around which is strange... Well this is something I have to sort out but the reason for this thread is about OWA access for both servers...

For 2010 I created a host name in our internal DNS server as mail.example.com and for 2007 legacy.example.com. I created MX records for both with FQDN as well. Our internet MX record points to mail.example.com. After this I setup OWA access for both servers, https://mail.example.com/owa for 2010 and https://legacy.example.com/owa for 2007. I moved few mailboxes from 2007 to 2010 and tried to access them internally through Outlook Desktop App and OWA... Both worked fine. Then I tried to access some mailboxes in 2007 internally through https://mail.example.com/owa... 2010 received the request and detected that the mailboxes are on 2007 and redirected me to https://legacy.example.com/owa... So far good...

Then I tried accessing OWA from the internet through https://mail.example.com/owa... For the mailboxes in 2010 it worked fine and fast... But when I tried to access mailboxes in 2007 it took some time after authentication and timed out saying https://legacy.example.com is taking too long to respond... I tried few things to rectify this, but no joy.

I was wondering whether 2010 server just send the redirect to the browser of the internet user and forget about the internal redirect to the legacy server's OWA... In this case internet users will not be able to resolve the name as I haven't updated it in our internet DNS... But I'm not sure that we have to do this as we created a MX record (mail.example.com) in our internet DNS... Any help to resolve this issue will be greatly appreciated :) Thanks in advance :)

In order for proper legacy redirection to take effect from the internet, you must register legacy.example.com on the internet DNS and have it point to the exchange 2007 CAS server.

Check out Step 9 under "Transitioning an Exchange 2007 environment to Exchange 2010 " section of the following link:

Thanks a lot for the link... I read that but was not sure whether it is a must or not... Seems like I have to have the legacy name in the external DNS :)
