I am trying to get an application to relay email to external people and am having an issue. The error coming from the application is 503 5.5.2 Need Rcpt Command. I was able to remove the Class C subnet from "Hardware Relay" (see below) and send an anonymous email using telnet but ended up with a new issue in the application saying it could not authenticate.

I have 2 new connectors and have not touched the Default or Client.

One connector is used for delivering alerts from hardware devices to our internal IT dept called "Hardware Relay". This relay also handles our incoming email. The settings are:
Receive mail from: (Internal class C & External mail providor)
Authentication: TLS & Exchange Server authentication
Permission groups: Anonymous, Exchange users & Exchange servers

The other connector is used only for annonymous external relay and is set as:
Receive mail from (internal applications by IP and not subnet)
Authentication: Nothing checked
Permission groups anonymous.
NOTE: Ran the powershell command to give anonymous access on the relay connector

I am totally confused as to what determines what connector the exchange org will use and also think we are not setup very well so any help as to what you'd modify, delete or add would be helpful.

On the custom connectors, have you set specific IP addresses or IP ranges for systems that are allowed to use those connectors?
If so, then Exchange can determine that it will use those instead of the standard connectors.
