So, long story short, I had Exchange 2003 in my organization and wanted to go to 2013. Found out during install attempt that, of course, the two are incompatible. Installed Exchange 2007 and migrated all my 2003 mailboxes to Exchange 2007. Decommissioned 2003 Exchange and via ADSIEdit, have made sure the servers are gone. All is good so far.

In Exchange 2007, mail is working fine (no edge server, just single Hub/ Transport server with send/ receive connectors configured. I noticed that NEW mailboxes that were being created on Exchange 2007 server, LOOKED like they were being created just fine, but when a user tries to configure mailbox, server and name get resolved just fine, but when Outlook tries to open the mailbox, I get "Unable to open default folders". using OWA, upon login, user will get "mailbox does not exist" error. This is for NEW USERS ONLY, existing users that were legacy and migrated, work perfectly.

So I figured whatever the deal was, I would just install Exchange 2013 and leave my problems in the dust. Exchange 2013 install went PERFECTLY (I hate the web GUI btw). Exchange 2007 server is still in place as well. New 2013 Web GUI sees 2007 mail stores and mailboxes. So now, I am creating new users and mailboxes for them on Exchange 2013 server to test before migration of existing ones. On Exchange 2013, new mailboxes are created for users JUST FINE, works great, no errors. Can even moved newly created mailboxes between databases on new Exchange 2013 server.

When I attempt to configure OUTLOOK for new mailbox, in server/ user configuration screen when I try to resolve them, I get "cannot log on or verify mailbox, name cannot be resolved" BUT via OWA, the user can open their mailbox and work JUST FINE. Mail incoming and outgoing works like a champ, just cannot hit the mailbox with OUTLOOK.

And finally, my test mailbox on Exchange 2013 can send mail to a box on Exchange 2007 just fine, but not vice versa, even when responding to the sent email. I always get "The recipient's e-mail address was not found in the recipient's e-mail system. Microsoft Exchange will not try to redeliver this message for you. Please check the e-mail address and try resending this message, or provide the following diagnostic text to your system administrator"

If you wanna see the Diagnostic Information I will be happy to copy and paste it but here are the top few lines:

Diagnostic information for administrators:

Generating server: MOFTARKIN.cityhall.lebanon

moftarkin1.email@lebanontn.org
#550 5.1.1 RESOLVER.ADR.RecipNotFound; not found ##

Original message headers:

Received: from MOFTARKIN.cityhall.lebanon ([fe80::d044:7329:a47d:9c97]) by
moftarkin.cityhall.lebanon ([fe80::d044:7329:a47d:9c97%13]) with mapi;

So now until I can figure it out, I'm scared to death to try to MOVE any existing mailboxes over to the new 2013 server for fear something will screw up. I know I'm gonna have to pick one and see what happens but my users, for the time being are all still working. Any ideas guys? And thanks in advance for the help

As a heads up, I have now configured the Receive connector for the Exchange 2013 server to be the INCOMING mail connector. The Exchange 2007 SEND connector is still in use as is the Active Sync that is associated with that outgoing IP address.

And mail to existing users who were migrated to 2007 from 2003 is flowing. So I know the 2013 and 2007 mail servers are talking to one another

After talking to Microsoft tech support today I realized two things:

1) Apparently, at this time, even though I have seen nothing to the contrary and the 2013 prerequisite check brought up no errors or warnings, Exchange 2013 and Exchange 2007 (or 2010) installed TOGETHER in an environment IS NOT SUPPORTED BY MICROSOFT AT ALL (caps that to make sure anyone reading sees it and does not make the same mistake I did)

With a forthcoming service pack, they are supposed to be supported by tech support but at this time they are not, so you cannot get help with any problems regarding 2007 in a 2013 deployed environment.

Figured out the problem with Outlook getting onto 2013. You basically MUST let Outlook 2010 (2003 is NOT supported with Exchange 2013) autodiscover the account. It is nigh on impossible to manually set up. Tech tried to explain to me how that is done, should you ever need it, but it was so convoluted I just let it go and pray that autodiscovery never fails. So I will post my 2007 problem over in the Exchange 2007 forum.
