Hi there, A colleague of mine was recently messing about with an old server and thought it might be a good idea to put a copy of Exchange 2010 on it. I'm not quite sure why he did it, but we now have an additional unconfigured Exchange server in our production AD. To complicate matters slightly further, the unconfigured exchange server has had a catastrophic failure and it can't be powered on/restarted, so I can't uninstall Exchange from it. Is there a way to remove it and what do I need to do to keep our production Exchange server happy. The production Exchange server seems to know about the unconfigured one, because we're getting a license countdown on it. Can I just use ADSIE to remove it from AD or is it more involved that? If you can't powerOn the server itself, there isn't any option other then removing the server from Adsiedit.msc Go ahead and remove it from Adsiedit.msc

Its almost always a bad idea to use ADSIEdit to remove a problematic Exchange 2010 server (and Microsoft won't support you if you do). The problem is that it will leave behind several lingering objects and backlinks in other parts of your Exchange org. While it does takes a bit more time and effort, I would highly suggest you go through the effort of standing up a server (could even be a small virtual machine) and then gracefully remove from the org.
