Exchange database i.e. edb files may fail to mount in following situations:
1. mailboxes are corrupted
2. database may be in dirty shutdown state
3. server based internal services fails to mount
4. fails to mount old database when a new database is already mounted
and many more!!
In severe circumstances if becomes difficult for any exchange users to mount the database and bring it back to functional state. Here, you can export all mailboxes from dismounted database to pst files and then import pst files in new database.

hello,
You need to export old EDB files to PST file first, Then only you can able to migrate from exchange 2007 to 2010. For converting EDB to PST i found convert EDB tool as most appropriate and affordable software. With the help of this tool you can convert EDB file to PST even if it is dismounted, corrupted or password protected.

Hi..
Here you have two options.
one is to first export the data to pst format and then importing the pst file to another server and another is by using a third party tool to perform the entire conversion.
Manual process is little hectic and time consuming so i will recommend you to try a tool that can do the entire conversion within a few clicks.
from my personal experiance i will suggest you to use Exchange EDB to PST **** to perform the entire conversion.
