I'm using Exchange 2007 on Small Business Server 2008 Standard, both patched except for February patches. We use GFI MailEssentials on-premises for anti-spam. For the past few days GFI has been kicking out a number of failed mails. I'm used to that happening sometimes, I have a batch file that resubmits them. But it wasn't always emailing me that there were failed mails. So I was doing some debugging. I made a big fat mistake. I left the GFI AS and AV Scan Engine services disabled between noon and 2 PM. Every email that hit the server in that time failed, and didn't seem to be anywhere in the seven possible places I know of for such mails. I got a CSV of all of them and notified all my users of the possibility of lost mails and what mails might be lost. This morning I noticed a bunch of .eml, .txt, and .bad files in C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\TransportRoles, where I wasn't expecting them. All of the files were dated today and named "Replaysrc151_failed<some hex number>". I opened some and determined that at least some were failed mails from yesterday, and renamed them and dumped them in C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\TransportRoles\Pickup. Several of them I couldn't open in a text editor; "File does not exist" even when opening from the context menu. A few .bad files I can't touch, the system can't determine the owner and won't let me take ownership or show me the ACL. Turns out a fair number of the files were from as long ago as last October. I haven't been able to check if they were delivered originally or not, they don't show up on their original date when I run a search but maybe they are too old to be still in the logs. ????
