We currently are running exchange server 2003 environment on 6 servers. We wanted to introduce a exchange 2010 server but mainly the mailbox role to host a few mailboxes. Is this installation possible? Or do we have to install CAS and HUB transport roles for exchange 2010 also?

In any exchange 2010 deployment, you must deploy at a minimum mailbox role to hold the user data, hub transport role for mail routing and the client access role to allow users to connect to their mailboxes. But all three roles can be combined on the same server (this is the typical installation of E2K10).

By installing these roles it should not affect mail flow from my exchange server 2003 servers. Am I correct? If that is the case cant I just install the new exchange server 2010 and let it coexist with the exchange 2003 server and any mailbox moved to the 2010 exchange box should receive emails and be able to send?

Yes you are correct. No impact to Exchange 2003 and any mailbox moved to the new server will receive mail through the Exchange 2003 server as it does now. When the mail is received, the Exchange 2003 server will check AD to determine the home server location of the users mailbox. If on E2K3, it will be a local delivery. If on E2K10, 2003 will send the message to Exchange 2010 to find the mailbox and deposit it.
