Hello all,

I've been tasked with migrating my organization (about 1,000 users, currently using 3 exchange servers) from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013. I'm fairly comfortable with Exchange, having managed Exchange since the 5.0 days, but my experience pretty much stopped with 2007.
Has anyone had experience with consulting firms that can help me with the planning stages of the migration? Any recommendations?

Hi,

You must know the fact that Microsoft doesn't allow you to migrate your Exchange server directly to a version skipping an earlier one i.e. 2010 in your case. Here, you must use any utility tool to avoid the risks associated like data loss and for simple and safe migration.
You may use any of the tool available for migration. The free trial of one such reliable tool is available at-

We worked with a consultant in the past who used Priasoft Migration Solution www.priasoft.com I'm sure they can point you towards a consultant.

That is absolutely incorrect. You can migrate mailboxes directly from 2007 to 2013. Provided your Exchange 2013 environment is at least Cumulative Update 2 and your Exchange 2007 environment is at least SP3 Update Rollup 11.

You dont have to export to PST or use third party tools. I think that guy works for some company selling third party tools... you dont need it. The native Exchange 2013 new-moverequest applets work just fine.

How do I know this? Because I am in the middle of a 10,000 seat 2007 to 2013 migration right now...

It's actually quite easy. The hardest part is setting up the "legacy" coexistance environment. You have to create a DNS host called legacy.yourcomain.com and re-point all your 2007 CAS requests (autodiscover, OAB, etc) to that URL (easy to do). But you also have to make sure your certifictes have all the names you need (autodiscover, webmail, cas, legacy, the server's name, etc) or you will have issues.

It's not rocket science, I am in the middle of a huge migration now. As long as you are not doing cross-forest moves, you will be fine.

For a successful planning and migration from exchange 2007 to 2013, you need to follow a series of steps.
Such as: Post-Installation Configuration Changes, Updating the Service Connection Point for AutoDiscover, New SAN/UCC SSL Certificate Generation, Generating the new certificate CSR, then finally Applying the certificate to the Exchange 2013 Server.

+1 on Priasoft's Migration suite. Our company used their tool a few months ago. Migrated approx 2000 mailboxes. The dry-run feature was a god send. It gave us an exact schedule on when our project would be completed. It exposed about 100 mailboxes that were corrupted. Successfully moved over all of our delegates, contacts, rules and PF's. No issues.

Saved us a huge headache. Great investment.
