Exchanged installed on SBS2003 with ISA firewall. I've run all the wizards, checked DNS, changed the MX record. Setup the SMTP virtual server. Nothing looks out of place.

Hi, Try to telnet on port 25 from the Exchange server first to itself and send a message to yourself. If OK try to telnet from a different workstation or even ISA. If OK, try to telnet from the Internet and try to drop a piece of mail. You can also enable message tracking on the server and check whether Exchange gets any mail. ISA has to pass traffic to Exchange on port 25. Try all these tests in order and see where you get stuck. You can also look into your SMTP log and check if you get any inbound traffic.

Thanks, I can't Telnet to the server. I logged onto another server and tried it from outside and it's not allowing me to. I get the following error: "could not open a connection to host on port 25: connect failed. Guess that's it. Problem is I tried to manaully open it in ISA and when I do a port scan it says closed and never open. Any ideas? Are you familuar with ISA and Small Business Server 2003?

OK, if I telnet my email server from the server it works, if I use the servers name. If I telnet using mail.domainname.com it doesn't. Does this help you at all. Thanks for all the help so far.

Check your SMTP virtual server properties on the last tab under the FQDN you should have HostName.DNSSuffixForTheConnection. So if you do an ipconfig /all on the server you should get your host name and DNS suffix. This is what you should have under FQDN. After you change it try to telnet from Exchange to FQDN on port 25. You should not have your FQDN match your MX record - so mail.domain.com is MX and exchangeSBS.domain.local can be your FQDN. ISA should pass all inbound traffic on port 25 to SMTP(Exchange). I think you need a rule to allow this. Test it from outside by doing a telnet to your external IP (the one behind your MX record). You should get the banner from Exchange. Are you able to telnet from Exchange, internet, another workstation or none? Do you also run any antivirus on this Exchange server? Ron

every thing looks OK on the SMTP server, I can telnet from the server but not from the outside in. Could the MX record be wrong? Should there be a MX record on my server?

Found the problem, it was the SMTP virtual server. I changed the IP address from the actual address to "All unassigned" and it's now working.
