Hi people

any ideas on the following NDR? possibly blocked from the recipient..?

You do not have permission to send to this recipient. For assistance, contact your system administrator.
<ourmailserver #5.7.1 smtp;501 5.7.1 This system is not configured to relay mail from <ouruser> to <destinationuser@keeblehawson.co.uk> for <our IP>>

also another one to a different domain:
#5.7.1 smtp;550 5.7.1 <destinationuser@crosbyhomes.co.uk>... Relaying denied>

thanks

This issue could be due to Reverse DNS lookup. Some companies will use RDNS to try and determine if the email is being sent from the responsible mail server indicated by the MX record.

If your public MX record FQDN/IP does not match the FQDN/IP of your outgoing SMTP server, the destination SMTP server may reject the email as a possible relay attempt.

You can correct this by setting the Masquerade domain option of your outgoing SMTP virtual server to match the name on the MX record.

Remember to restart the SMTP service after making this change.

Good luck!

thanks for the tips guys. much appreciated.

I think I have sort of figured the problem.
Checking the email address. I had a entry for all of these external contacts under alternative smtp address as FirstnameLastname@mydomain.

As this happened to all of the 300 contacts I created for this DL, I think I am safe to assume this is normal behaviour in exchange [Smile]
Anyway I have removed this so the only entry I have for smtp is the external address of the contacts.
Got the user to resend the email and seemed to have worked fine. At least no complaints so far.
Can't explain it though.
Would appreciate any comments explainations.

thanks

Glad that you seem to have worked this one out. Keep in mind that the Recipient Update Policy is what applied the other SMTP address to the contact. If you do not want them applied to these contacts then you will either need to:

Change your recipient policy filter so that these contacts (in a separate OU maybe?) do not get the policy applied to them

or

After you create the contact, remove the check mark from the Automatically update email addresses based on Recipient Policy box to prevent it from reapplying it to the contacts.

Good luck!
