Clink Outlook 2003
Server Exchange 2003 SP1

When attempting to update client rules and alerts to the server the following dialog box message is returned:

One or more rules could not be uploaded to Exchange server and have been deactivated. This could be because some of the parameters are not supported or there is insufficient space to store all of your rules.

The rules worked prior to adding an Exchange account to the client. The Exchange mailbox does not have a size limitation.

Any help is appreciated.

I also have the same problem.

My understanding of this problem is that Outlook 2003 is trying to store its client side rules (that is rules which are running on the Outlook .pst file) on the server side. I haven't seen an explanation to why this limitation occurs within Exchange Server or how it can be fixed. FYI: I am using Exchange Server 2000 Service Pack 3 + the latest Post SP hotfixes and Outlook 2003.

However, I did find this Knowledge Base article on Microsoft's web site
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;826969

The article doesn't specifically address the problem, but working in reverse, if you have a server side rule (which all rules automatically become when connected through an Exchange Client) and make the rule "On this machine Only" then the problem goes away.

Each rule needs to be Edited and the "On this Machine Only" option selected. It is located at the bottom of the list in Step 1. When creating new rules, this option also needs to be selected.

Unfortunately I have unable to locate any information on how to remove the limitation with server-side rules.

Alias, after thinking I had solved the problem and posting the answer above, I tried to add a couple more rules and encountered the same problem.....
