I am having a heck of a time trying to find some way to restore an information store backup. I had OWA suddenly stop working for all clients outside the LAN, so ran NTBACKUP and backed up the information store. I also stopped the MS Information Store and made a copy of the MDBDATA folder.

I then uninstalled IIS and Exchange. Then reinstalled IIS, then Exchange. I have yet to find a way to restore or merge the old information store/mailboxes. I desperately need some help. I would like to restore the old store or merge it with the one in use now.

I am running MS Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition and Exchange Server 2003. I have only 1 server, so I can't do some fancy multi-server tricks.

Thanks.

Have you looked into using Recovery Storage Group?

If not, then I think it will solve your problems:

Well, the database is not showing up in the list of files to mount. I need some way for exchange to recognize the old database files.

Let's look at this a different way... Why won't ntbackup let me restore the backup?! It says the server is not an exchange server. I know it is though. This is driving me crazy! Please help.

Were you able to create the Recovery Storage Group?

Did you add your current Store into that Recovery Storage Group?

If so, you should be able to dismount that Store in Recovery Storage Group, and try to run a restore from your backup tape. The Restore will automatically go into your Recovery Store.

If you get this to work, I think this is your best bet in merging your data back into the current system, otherwise you will need another computer that you can install Exchange onto.

This is a work around for "The server is not an Exchange server" when you try to restore.
