All our user mails are stored in the server only, not in their machines personnel folder. Now which files i have to backup to safe all mailboxes of our company users, and which is the best way to take back regularly.
Thanks in advance

Deemas, You need to provide more information. For example, what are you going to use to backup data? How much data and how many users do you need to back up? and what sort of restore solution do you want? With no info I would say all Exchange mailboxes, public folders (if you have any), Information store, system state data and the IIS metabase. I think thats it, please feel free to correct me if I have missed anything.

Thank you Mike,
Actually, in case of unrecoverable failure to the server we want to keep backup. For example if somhing happen to server (hardware/software failure) from this backup we should rerun the Exchange Server. That's why i am asking how to restore Exchange server with a mail boxes within a short period.
More over we have about 25 Users.
Please explaine with more detail.
Thanks again..

Hi jonesos, I'd like to know about the same solution for my case. I have 2 Windows 2003 Servers, one of the is a domain controller(Server 1), the other one's installed Exchange Server 2003 (Server 2). I have a StorageWorks DAT 72Gb. for making backups. This device is installed on Server 1. I have approximatelly 35 users.
What solution do you suggest for this case? I mean, what type of backup would you do? I don't think an automatic one would be the solution for this since I need this same backup device to be used for SQL Server database backup and that I think I'll do automatically.
What tool do you suggest me to do this backup?
Thanks in advance,
Marcelo.

Will try and reply properly in the next day or two.

Hi,
If you have a backup of your AD (system state on domain controllers) and the exchange information store by using an exchange aware backup program such as ntbackup you should be able to recover from most if not all disasters.
Should the exchange server crash completely you install a new server with the same name as the existing exchange server (and same windows service pack and hotfixes) and then install exchange with the /disasterrecovery switch you should be able to restore the information store and be back in the air.

Deemas, Agree with Leif regards the restore solution in the event of failure. You also have to look at what sort of backup solution you want ie Normal, Copy,Incremental, Daily or Differential. I wont go into the relevant details of each as they can be found in most literature or webites. Do you use NTBackup or Veritas or some other 3rd party product. Do you use tape backup and of what capacity? What quantity of data are you backing up?
Assuming that you are using tape and have a large tape capacity and a relatively small amount of data then you could do a normal backup every night during off peak hours, that way you only have one tape to restore from. Of course, it all depends on a lot of factors and you must investigate these.
Apologies for the late reply,
Mike

Marcelo, The same considerations that apply to Deemas also apply to you. 35 users isnt that many and shouldnt generate too much data. Your capacity seems fine too. Are you using NTBackup? Again if the data is relatively low then you could just do a normal every day (it still takes a while though). Each backup solution depends on the environment. Something for you to think about. Why do you want to do the exchange backup manually and the SQl automatically? Are you putting them on different tapes?
