Hi,

Before running dcpromo on the new server you should run the following 2 commands on the old server:

adprep /forestprep and adprep /domainprep (adprep is on the windows 2003 cd).

After that you can run dcpromo on the new server and select to add an additional domain controller for an existing domain. Next you must run setup /forestprep and setup /domainprep from the exchange 2003 cd and then run setup itself.

Now you can move all mailboxes and public folders to the new server and also before decommisioning the old server move all FSMO roles and make the new server a GC

Bring up Active Directory Users and Computers (on the Windows 2003 server), right click on "Active Directory Users and Computers [......]" and select "Operations Masters..."

From here, you can move "RID", "PDC" and "Infrastructure" roles over to the W2K3 server.

Next, launch "Active Directory Domains and Trusts", right click on "Active Directory Domains and Trusts[.....]" and select "Operations Master..."

From here, you can move the "Domain Naming Master" role to your W2K3 server.

To become a GC, launch "Active Directory Sites and Services", expand the site, servers and your servername until you see "NTDS Settings", from here, right click on "NTDS Settings" and select "Properties", in the "Properties", tick the box "Global Catalog".

And finally, you have the Schema Master role, it's not as easy to seize, so follow this article by Microsoft (it has all the steps to seize all roles):
