Barry is practically right-on w/solution, however this can be done without the user logging into multiple mailboxes or having his name appear in the GAL multiple times.
Create a new mailbox with what you want as an additional primary SMTP (@companyX.com). In mailbox properties of companyX.com, setup the users primary mailbox as "alternate recipient".
Have the user find it in the GAL and add to contacts.
Hide this entry (companyX.com)in the GAL.
The user should add the FROM: field when composing new messages. When he wants to send mail as companyX.com, he'll simply need to add that contact in FROM:.
Responses will be sent to him, based on the "alternate recipient" configuration.
Regards, Louise
