kevin_matthews -> adding contact categories globally (26.Jun.2003 3:56:00 AM)

I'm trying to add contact categories globally to all users. I can obviously add them to my contacts but cannot see anything in Exchange 2000 System Manager to let me add to the default contact categories list. Any ideas...?

There's no global categories list in Outlook or Exchange.

Up to and including Outlook 2003 you can export/import categories via the registry. You can automate that via a logon script. It will overwrite existing entries and doesn't work between different versions of Outlook.

With Exchange and Outlook 2007 you can deploy categories via GPO. With that you can share categories, but only with OL 07 clients - and colors are not supported.

Additionally, both methods update/overwrite categories only once on Outlook startup.

For more details please see this article.

With Category Manager you can share categories between different versions of Outlook, and colors are supported for OL07 clients. The update takes place at startup and/or at intervals. And you can decide yourself whether or not existing categories shall be overwritten.
