Can someone clarify some very basic points for me. I am trying to setup a "mailing list" such as 'all finance users' and am a bit confused on the issue of address list, distibution groups etc.

Is it true that :

1) An address list is a simply a filter to view a subset of the global address list. You couldn't send an e-mail addressed to a address list, but I suppose you could add all recipients shown in this view to your message. However, the entries in any address list have to have something in common to be selected by whatever filter you define.

2) A distribution group can be a group made up of random users (not selected by filter) and providing it is mail-enabled, you can adress an e-mail to this group and it will be delivered to anyone who is a member of this group (traditional mailing list).

Why, then is it possible to create a distribution group without an e-mail address ? doesn't this this create mailing list that can't be used ? what is the other purpose of distribution groups ?

If I create mail-enabled distribution groups to achieve what I would call mailing lists (as described in first para), can these be moved between organizational units (if necessary) without any problems ? should I create an OU dedicated for exchange mailing lists ?

I am also interested to hear information on these subjects as well. I would also like to know if can include Public Folders in a distribution list.
