I have rebuilt a test domain to preform this restore on.

I have built the DC and the exchange server box. Both with the orignial names.

Pretty much a mini-replica of our current domain.

What I have is two bkf files from a scheduled NTBackup. One for system state and one for infostore.

When I try to run the restore from inside of NTBackup, pointing it to the local box, which is the exchange server, it gives an error of "this machine is not an exchange server or exchange services are not running"

I have verified that all services are running and machine is working perfectly.

Has anyone been able to restore from NTBackup files?

I am trying to recover some mail a user deleted just before termination.

Well, depending on how big is the database size but what you can do is just restore the mdbdata folder and then export the user's mail out of that.

If I dive down through the BKF file and just try to restore the Mailbox Store Folder, and try to restore to a local pc or any other pc, it gives the same "this is not an exchange server" error.

Well I finally got a restore going, but it hangs at around the 7gig mark.

Any ideas?

7gig hang was a disk space issue, I have that taken care of now.

The restore goes as planned, but when I try to mount the mailbox store, I get errors.

I am not so much worried about mounting the store since the EDB files were restored, but when I try to run ExMerge on the files, I will not open them.

Anyone have any luck with this stuff?
